A reminder - 

We will be meeting tomorrow morning (Wednesday, February 27th) at 8:30 AM in the school commons and then will head off to the Penticton Court House.  If you don't have your permission slip to Mr. S. you won't be able to go so make sure you are good to go!  

Watching 12 Angry Men - Hearing from Ms. Lindquist - and watching the news clip on Steven Truscott is leading us to consider not only the role of the Jury but also the fundamental piece of our system - 

The burden of proof - and - reasonable doubt.

Please take some time to work through one of the questions here (sent home last week) so we can carry on the discussion about the underpinnings of our Criminal Justice System.  Also - don't forget to get those permission forms signed and returned so we can all get to the Courthouse on the 25th.

Choose one of the following and prepare to Report Back to the class on what you find:

1. How expensive is the Jury system? 
a. What are some arguments against its further use?

2. Find an example of a Canadian who was wrongfully convicted and tell their story.

3. Find an example of person who was found innocent in a court of law but is largely considered guilty in the court of public opinion and tell their story.

4. If you were on trial when would you consider using a jury versus a judge?  Why?

Mr. S. has not been on top of the website for awhile but now that semester two (term 3) has arrived please note that the Unit Outlines are updated here.

We will be working at the Criminal Court System in February and this is a unit with plenty of material to dig through so be prepared!

On another note, some of you missed a quiz on Criminal Offences that was based on student work - If you are in that group you need to answer the following:

1. What is the difference from 1st to 2nd degree murder?
2.  What is the difference between the three levels of Assault (describe each)?
3.  How do the 3 levels of Assault compare to the 3 levels of Sexual Assault?

On Friday's Class we held a quick survey at the end of the period to consider how we want to arrange our classes and assignments in the future...

After the polls were closed and ballots counted here were the following results:

We'll talk about the ramifications of our results in class on Tuesday and also prepare a final assignment or test for Chapter 7 based on these results!

Yes - This week we have been visited by the RCMP and are developing our own Crime Scenes!

They should be ready for Wednesday's class (the end of) for show.

On Friday we will be looking at arrest procedures, search warrants, and legal and illegal searches.

We'll be having a test on this material next week (last week of November)...

2.     Use the Criminal Code of Canada website to determine the specific crime that the accused would be charged

3.     Repeat the above for a 2nd fairy tale

Provide the following information for each fairy tale:

1.     An overview (summary) of the fairy tale highlighting the crime and the different characters – accused, victim(s), other parties (ones who aided, counseled the crime), witnesses

2.     Crime that was committed by the accused

3.     Actus reus of the crime

4.     Mens rea for the crime

5.     Acting as the Judge, would you find the accused guilty or not guilty of the crime based on the evidence in the story
